Bone Made's 'Californian Bungalow' project in Concord was a complete renovation and extension for a bustling family of 6. Their home is heritage listed, so we ensured adherence to heritage guidelines, whilst also striking a cohesive balance between classic and contemporary design elements.

The stunning result was featured as the cover article in Adore Home Magazine, as well as appearing in Home Beautiful, The Design Files, The Local Project and Sitchu Living – you can read about it here.

The project scope included designing the entry/mud room, an open plan living, kitchen and dining area, a rumpus room for the kids, four bedrooms with custom built-in joinery and two bathrooms, whilst also providing the design direction for the alfresco area.

The overall vision was inspired by the bones and classic nuances of the 'Californian Bungalow Style'. The home had beautiful traditional detailing, including ornate ceilings, and a generous bay window with leadlight glass. We integrated sophisticated details to compliment these, such as oak herringbone floors throughout, large French doors opening out onto the alfresco area, and a gas fireplace with an exposed flue built into timeless custom rattan and oak joinery.

Aged brass detailing is showcased throughout the joinery, (created by Uneek Interior Solutions) and fixtures, providing another subtle hint of a decorative past. Storage was a key feature to ensure everything had a place and daily clutter could be minimised. For the bay window we deepened the window seat, creating storage space underneath.  A credenza with patinaed brass detailing adorns one wall of the living space, topped with a soft grey Engineered stone which continues on from the generous kitchen benchtops. The format of the bedroom wardrobes took our client’s requirements for themselves and their kids into consideration to ensure optimal functionality.

The mudroom provides a practical space, with a child-friendly, wipeable bench seat in a tan leather-look vinyl – perfect for putting on shoes. A wall of delightful jade green brings brightness, with ample shelf space, and round hooks to hold laden school bags.

To give our clients a place of quiet self-care, we designed a hidden ensuite accessible through the custom-made wardrobe doors. A refined yet bold colour palette creates a feeling of opulence, with a double shower and his-and-hers sinks allowing for some personal space.  Deep, generous vanity drawers ensure all of the everyday toiletry items are hidden away to preserve a sense of tidy simplicity. We also styled each room, selecting beautiful furniture to align with the design concept.

There are so many elements of this home that bring ease, a sense of playfulness and an effortless stylistic balance. From concept to completion, it was a joy to work collaboratively to create a truly unique and enlivened space that will see this family through many precious years together.

“Before embarking on our renovation journey, we knew little about the process of building and designing but knew that we were extremely time poor, kid heavy and lacking confidence in our own ability to create a beautiful forever home for our expanding family.

Leah and Fliss took on this project without hesitation embracing the time and heritage constraints and our inexperience of the process, immediately allowing us to stop, take a breath and feel confident that our dream could become a reality.

They confidently took on each stage of the build, communicating seamlessly with all involved and relaying every detail to us to ensure that they were hitting the brief with each idea they presented.

For us, the genius behind Bone Made lies in the attention to detail that both Leah and Fliss possess. From the initial conceptual stages to the very last walk through, each space was meticulously checked, no detail left unchecked, and every aspect referenced on a schedule giving us the confidence that we otherwise lacked. Their knowledge of the design and space they created for us was phenomenal.

Leah and Fliss have brought to life our dream home, or as our 6-year-old refers to it "our hotel". Finally, living in these beautiful spaces has given us an appreciation like no other for the ability these two have to not only create a stunning space, but also create a home that is so practical and so beautiful, I hope we will never leave.”
