Bone Made was engaged to renovate this Federation family home, allowing it to encompass a more contemporary feel. The result was a harmonious synthesis of style, recently featured in the March 2023 edition of Inside Out magazine

Working with our clients, and the needs of their busy family, we focused on bringing light and flow into the space and releasing it from its 1990s décor. It was the kind of design project we are particularly passionate about – honouring the clients’ wish to pay homage to the existing character of the home, whilst bringing a timelessness into the space to be enjoyed by its family for years to come.

Retaining the original period details, such as the ornate ceiling roses and stained glass windows, the residence underwent a complete redesign. The scope of work included the re-design of the foyer, formal sitting room, office, study nook, open plan kitchen, living, dining, multiple bathrooms, laundry, master bedroom and alfresco entertaining area.

We began by removing the original wall between the formal dining and living rooms, opening up the space significantly and allowing light to flood in. The flow throughout was enhanced and, in addition to the existing high ceilings, a generous open plan contemporary family home was created. To provide a subtle division between this newly designed living area, we relocated a window – moving it further along the wall and adding a cosy, custom-built window seat – the perfect place to enjoy those quieter moments. We also designed a sandstone cladded fireplace, adding a textural layer of warmth to the home.

A couple of key features we designed for the family optimised the feeling of calm and containment in the space. One was incorporating a hidden laundry and appliance nook that could be closed behind pocket doors in the kitchen cabinetry. Another was a second study, also tucked behind pocket doors, providing a functional work from home space that could be neatly shut away when the working day was done.

Finishes such as natural terrazzo in the bathrooms, contemporary black pendant lighting, brushed copper tapware and infusions of soft mint green in the joinery were selected to bring in some contrasting and quirky elements.

On completion, the family resettled into a calm, sophisticated home that retained its unique character; providing plenty of room for their growing daughters to play and spaces of quiet sanctuary.

“Fliss and Leah were involved with our project from day one. We came across them on Instagram and fell in love with their designs. We wanted a modern, sophisticated home, while retaining its Federation heritage character and they've delivered just that!

They took out the stress in renovating a home and made the process a lot more enjoyable for us. Thank you!”
