Concept Coastal Layers
Our clients purchased their home in a leafy suburb on Sydney’s Northern Beaches, committed to transforming it’s dated interior into an uplifting environment for their growing family. We were invited in to redesign and refresh the majority of the house, and drew inspiration from its beach-side vista. Situationally, the home naturally leant itself to a ‘coastal’ theme, but we wanted to add layers of nuance to elevate each space.
After reconfiguring the walls and floors to ensure an unimpeded flow of both space and light, we laid a foundation of Nordic-toned timber floors coupled with the organic texture of Venetian plaster for the walls. In the entrance, the textured crazy paving feature wall and solid timber doors draw the feeling of sunlit warmth inside. In collaboration with architect John Deuchrass, a minimalist staircase was designed to provide a simple, clean-lined feature to offset the gentle wall curvature, and statement ‘Nest’ pendant lights.
We continued to incorporate sweeping curves into the open-plan kitchen, living and dining room, pairing them with refined linear elements for aesthetic contrast. Arched cavity recessed sliding doors with carved timber inset pulls create a motif throughout, delineating space.
The feature kitchen island, crafted from Aida marble, provides a grounded, bold focal point. The intricate patterning of the marble is enhanced by subtle lighting underneath. To add a textural element, we specified the Hashi Border Japanese ceramic tile for the curved rangehood, and both tile and marble are complemented by custom-built warm-white cabinetry.
The living and dining space is quietly sophisticated. Sheer drapes diffuse the sunlight, light oak cabinets are topped with Aida marble, and the integrated Escea frameless gas fireplace maintains effortlessly clean lines. We specified a luxurious modular sofa to embrace the whole family, and a custom solid timber statement dining table, with tan Bellino chairs to ensure a harmonious blend of neutral tones. Northern Beaches artist Ash Holmes’ works bring vibrant, earthen colour to the space.
The office maintains the sense of calm that flows throughout the home, with nude-toned timber joinery complemented by an Aida marble top and shelves. A natural wool rug brings comfort, along with the curved, handmade desk and rustic chairs.
To provide an entirely rejuvenating haven, the bathroom maintains a refined simplicity. Tumbled limestone flooring is soft underfoot, with fluted glass bringing linear detailing, shifting light. Aida marble meets warm-white microcement cabinets, and hints of colour emerge in the subtle sage green wall lights, and brushed nickel fixtures.
Our clients home now feels apart of its surroundings, finding its place as an elevated, family sanctuary. It invites both quiet, private time together and the joy of shared celebrations with loved ones. May it be filled with all of the beautiful memories for many years to come.
